Percussion Improvisation
All percussion instruments, and the use of percussion instruments in improvisation, will be introduced to students choosing this as an option. Students will participate in percussion ensembles which will perform in student concerts.
Chamber Music
Students electing Chamber Music as an option will be assigned to small ensemble groups with other students. Coaching will be arranged for rehearsals and performances in the afternoon Option Period and during the daily student concert.
Introduction to Irish Trad Music
Classically trained music students are introduced to the mostly unwritten rules, tunes, method of communication, order of precedence and protocols for performing Irish Traditional Music. Students will perform in Trad Ensembles on student concerts.
Art
Students in Art classes will work with instructors in creative projects relating to music, including the designing and preparation of sets and props for opera productions.
English Language for Foreign Students
A qualified language instructor will be giving short daily 'English as a Second Language' classes for students who wish to increase their spoken English language skills.
Supervised Swimming
For those who request it, SMS supervisors will escort students to the university of Limerick Olympic-sized swimming pool each afternoon during the 3.00pm Option Period. The University Sports Centre has given SMS students a special rate of €3.00 for each visit to the pool, and five or ten day passes are available for €15.00 or €30.00 respectively. These passes may also be used for evening visits to the pool. Please indicate on the Application form if you wish to purchase these passes in advance
Weekend Scenic Tour
Subject to sufficient enrolment, a tour bus will be arranged to take SMS participants on a tour of visitor attractions in the west of Ireland. Depending upon bus and admission charges to attractions, there will be an additional charge.
Private Practice
Students may elect to devote one session each day to private practice. If necessary, practice sessions may be monitored by staff.
