Poet joins SMS choir for Te Deum @ St Mary’s Cathedral
Brian Mooney made a guest appearance as a tenor in the choir for Franz Joseph Haydn Te Deum.
Bruce Dunn conducted.
Last Thursday, the wonderful Clare poet, from Three Legged Stool Poets, sang his best.
Today, I caught up with him on the phone. Got his first impressions of listening to, & performing with, SMS.
“It was a lovely night. Edel O’Brien, who’s at college with our eldest daughter, sang beautifully. She really made the night for me.”
“It was all a wonderful performance. The standard was very high. I remember a great octet [nine minutes of You Tube Mendelssohn's Octet Op.20 live here] . Afterwards, I talked to a teacher who said the group of eight were three teachers & five students who loved the idea of performing with their teachers.
“There was very good interplay between students & faculty.
“I hadn’t experienced SMS before. I even saw Bob Creech & congratulated him but didn’t get a chance to talk to him: he was flitting around like a shadow.”
The performance was recorded and will be available soon from SMS.
“I think we needed more rehearsal time” said Brian. “We needed to use scripts. Haydn’s Te Deum, especially the end, is really very tricky. You can easily get lost. There was one person who said to me ‘My god, if go astray in that, you’re f**ked’. Ideally, we should have had it by heart.”
I was delighted to catch Brian off-guard, while the experience was fresh, and capture that raw phrase.
